Episode 338 – Kathy Carter
[00:00:09] Welcome to Screw the Commute. The entrepreneurial podcast dedicated to getting you out of the car and into the money, with your host, lifelong entrepreneur and multimillionaire, Tom Antion.

[00:00:24] Hey, everybody, it's Tom here with episode three hundred and thirty eight to screw the podcast. I'm here with Kathy Carter as part of Vetrepreneur's Month here at Screw the Commute Podcast.

[00:00:35] So she's got an interesting story. She's got a bunch of side hustle. She does. And she helps a lot of moms. But the moms can be more than moms. They could be primary caregivers for children. She helps. She's been helping them for years and years and years. So we'll hear her story in a minute. Now, how would you like to hear your own voice here on screw the commute? Well, if the shows helped you out at all in your business or giving you ideas to help you start a business, we want to hear about it.

So this would be three thirty eight. So screwthecommute.com/338 for the complete show notes how to contact Kathy. All the stuff that I just told you, it will be there so you don't have to memorize it. All right. Everybody's freaking out because of this pandemic, but we're not because we know how to sell online. And I have formalized my training in two ways.

[00:02:35] One is a mentor program that I'll tell you about later, and the other is a school. We have the only licensed dedicated Internet marketing and digital marketing school in the country, license to operate by SCHEV, the State Council on Higher Education in Virginia. But you don't have to live in Virginia. It's a distance learning school anywhere you can get an Internet connection and day or night you can study your your classes. And we also sense this as Venture Partners Month. I want to mention that we are allowed by the Department of Defense to participate in their scholarship program for military spouses. So we as a school and just my thanks to the veterans out there and military families, we give a fifty percent scholarship to start with and then the Department of Defense throws in another 4000 bucks. So this is a great opportunity for military spouses so that they have a portable skill so they don't have to take crappy jobs everywhere they go because employers know you're going to leave in a couple of years. So check that out at Imtech vague and give me a call. Makes a great gift for your grandchildren, nephews, nieces, so they don't so they can make their own money and not come back and live with you later. Okay.

[00:03:56] All right, let's get it to the main event, Kathy Carter is a retired military veteran. She's also a massage therapist. She's a coach. She's a bestselling author and an inspirational speaker. She is a transformational coach that helps moms go from overwhelming to feeling and experiencing a greater peace of mind. And as I was talking to her, I found out that it could be a man who's the primary caregiver for a child or children. It could be the grandparent. So it's not just the mom now. She also teaches them how to enjoy motherhood. Now, for over 25 years, Kathy has helped moms live more harmoniously with their own souls, bringing out the best in moms, all while their children reap the benefits of a more loving relationship.

[00:04:54] Kathy, are you ready to screw? The commute?

[00:04:57] Well, great meeting you. I on behalf of everybody that listen to screw the commute, I want to thank you for your service to our country. I understand there was, what, 18 years you gave to helping us stay safe. So in the Air Force.

[00:05:15] Absolutely, yes, so we really appreciate that.

[00:05:18] So so you've got a so you've got a pension going on to kind of keep the basics handled for yourself, but you are not a person that's just going to sit around and do nothing. I can see from your bio, so you've got some side hustles going on that are bringing in money as a business for you. Tell us about it.

[00:05:38] Yeah, well, I've been a licensed massage therapist since nineteen ninety one, so I've always had that as a side job. Mm hmm. I've even had my own business at times and even time having a full fledged business. And I love doing massage.

[00:05:56] You can do it. Even while you were in the in the service.

[00:05:58] I was in the military.

[00:06:00] Absolutely awesome. No, I'm a massage therapist. I can't believe how strong their hands are for women like they break your fingers off.

[00:06:12] In fact, people say, oh, you're so strong. I remember one client came in and like I requested a male therapist because I wanted deep tissue. I'm like, oh, you're going to get deep all right. You know what they call me? They want the Texas Chainsaw Massagicator. That guy would try to get away from my and try to warm out. And me, I'm like, what you going? That too deep.

[00:06:43] Oh, I do that.

[00:06:46] And I also I do some coaching on the side. Now, where are you located? I'm located right outside of Houston in a suburb called Bowsher, Texas.

[00:06:57] And you get the hurricane stuff?

[00:07:01] No, not yet. Good, good.

[00:07:05] All right. So so you got the massage thing going, but how does all this help and moms come about?

[00:07:12] Well, you know, I was you know, I have a lot of clients and over all these years, I've had many massage clients as females.

[00:07:23] And they like to talk to you, too, right?

[00:07:25] Oh, my goodness. Tell me. Oh, I'm so stressed out. This not over here is my 16 year old niece, not only in my 40s, not in the back of my head is my husband. I'm like, wow. And so they tell me all of their world and then tell me that kids are not listening and blah, blah, blah, blah.

[00:07:46] And so I would ask questions not knowing. Twenty five years ago, I really began a coaching business, not knowing it was coaching. Right. And they would come back and say, wow, you know what we talked about? I tried some things if it were to have been doing this over and over and over and over. Yes. A couple of years ago. I went to an event in California, and it's like, you know, you've been coaching all along. I got a certification of the code, but I realized that I had already begin the coaching business. And so I started coaching. And since I love working with Mom and I love working with children, not only do I coach and a massage therapist, but I substitute teach because I love being in the lives of children that say you're smart because I think you said you don't have any of your own.

[00:08:42] Right.

[00:08:43] Right. I don't have any children.

[00:08:45] So say you get your kid to do all this and they they have to take the brunt of the. Yeah, I can give you advice and then and go home and and sit with your feet up and watch TV.

[00:09:00] Actually that's true. But most of the times, like I have a lot of friends and family that have two or more children. So when I would go on vacation, I would vacation at their home and say, look, you guys want to go out of town for a week, I'll come hang out with the kids. Like what? You're the best friend. You're the best ever.

[00:09:21] Oh, that's that's a good idea.

[00:09:23] So so so for years you were doing your massage and getting paid for massage, but you were actually in part getting paid for coaching.

[00:09:33] Exactly, because it was it was like, wow, so now I'm like, so let's implement that together, let's get Mom to get them, have the coaching and do the massage and then send our home feeling so lovely. And when what are some of the biggest things, problems that parents are facing or moms are facing up the frustration, overwhelm of trying to control their children, trying to force their children to do what they want them to do. And when I realized I said, wait a minute, now let's talk about you. So moms either like everything's on the outside of her that she can't control. So then I said, okay, let's take care of yourself first. And less so than that way, because a lot of times they won't take care of themselves, they'll be like, well, you know, the kids come first. I'm like, are you on an airplane? We're on an airplane is in life. Right? So we'll be on an airplane and you're going to put that mask on first. You know, that's the thing on first and then help your children. And so a lot of parents are like, wow, I never felt like that. We had to take care of me first. And at the same time, I'm taking care of my children.

[00:10:56] Wow. And over the past twenty five years, there's been more and more women in the workplace, not at home with the kids that we've seen as change in kids.

[00:11:06] You know, when the parents are working both of our jobs and they don't spend as much time with the kids.

[00:11:12] Absolutely. And it's heartbreaking to me. And there's a lot of children because because I interact with children. I worked at Job Corps for five years part time, and I've always been instrumental in the lives of children. So I ask them questions because as parents, we want to tell them, tell them, tell them. But when I ask questions like, you know, my mom and dad is always working and they don't have time for me and they don't love me. And I'm like, no, they love you. So the children may know the parents love them, but they don't feel the love.

[00:11:44] Right. So when you have parents working and they come home and like a lot of my clients right now, they work from home and they're like, wow, I don't have much time for the kids. And it's like the kids are like they have their own electronic devices, their own cell phone on the TV or whatever. And parents are like, I give them everything. I'm like, you don't give them your time. And I see that so much. And it's just it seems like it's creating a wedge between the parent and they're unaware of this wedge between them and their children because they feel like I give them everything. They have a lovely house, you know, have all of the material things they could ever want.

[00:12:27] But they don't have you.

[00:12:28] So what do you tell them to do about it?

[00:12:31] So I ask them questions, I say. So you're saying that your child has everything they have.

[00:12:36] They want. What do they really want? Any problems?

[00:12:43] Well, I think that what you want them to have is that what they really want?

[00:12:49] Well, any really think in the same?

[00:12:53] You know what, I don't give because I won't tell a parent child enough times, right? I ask them a question, do I pull it out? And I'm like, you know what? I work a lot and I need to I need to change that. I need to have more quality time. I have four kids at to whatever, and I just don't spend a lot of time with the kids. And so they identify that, wow, because they're getting a massage and you talk on a table or they're being coached, they're like, huh, I never thought like that.

[00:13:26] Wow. Yeah. That's probably a big, big revelation for them. So. So tell me about the book. You say you have a book.

[00:13:35] Yes, I wrote a book with 13 other military women called Camouflaged Sisters.

[00:13:41] So you got good stuff. They're good. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:13:45] And and so we wrote just a small portion of our military career and my part was on the faith and that my my chapter was Activate Your Faith while under pressure. And it spoke about a situation I had when I was in the military diagnosed with a brain tumor. They want to do surgery, not to have surgery. People, you are not a girl. You just need to do that thing. I'm like, no, I'm not allowed to do that. So I'm going to go against the grain of what I know. So I wrote that part of the chapter and it just talked about faith, when you know what to do, do what you know, you have have understanding about it. You don't have to know what the outcome might be. Most times you don't know. But to do what you know to do and just don't go against it. And that's that was my.

[00:14:43] And so you didn't get brain surgery?

[00:14:46] I did not have the surgery.

[00:14:49] And a couple of years later, I lost my sight. And I laugh about it because it was something that caused my flight to go out of commission for like 24 hours. And they were like, we're going to cut this out of your head and take that tumor out. I like you like that. And that is leave me alone. And but it's going to be eventually shrunk.

[00:15:13] Oh, so you got your eyesight back?

[00:15:15] I have sight and only my left eye. My right eye. I tell people I'm not blind. It's just that there's no blood flow in the optic as an active nerve for that right eye is pale. That's all that the tumor sat there so long it just is pale. But if I ever get the blood flow, I'll be like, oh my goodness, I've seen you with both eyes.

[00:15:43] Well, half the people are no good anyway. So if you only see half of your hair cut.

[00:15:49] So we got to take a brief break here. And then when we come back, we're going to ask you what a typical day looks like for you and what's the future of your business look like.

[00:15:59] I know we're working on it, going to work on websites and all kinds of stuff.

[00:16:03] So so, folks, about 20 years ago, I turned the Internet marketing guru world on its head and that people at my level were charging 50 or 100 thousand bucks to teach the stuff that I teach. And I thought, you know what, that's not fair. And a lot of these people are rip offs. They won't even teach you if you gave them that kind of money. So so I kind of turned and made them all mad by charging an entry fee, which was way lower. And then I tied my success to to the person's success. So for me to get my fifty thousand, they had to make two hundred thousand. And people just loved this because they knew I wouldn't disappear on them.

[00:16:43] And they they knew that I'd stick with it to the end because I wouldn't get my fifty thousand. So so they just love this.

[00:16:52] And seventeen hundred students and twenty years later it's still going strong and it's the most unique. And I triple dog dare you to find anybody, anybody's program that can hold a candle to mind on value. So it's unique in that we give you one on one instruction. Nobody does and nobody in my life will even talk to you, let alone teach anything. So we give you one on one instruction myself and the entire crew that works here will make appointments with you, will even take over your computer screen and show you where to click and all these things that we teach. We also have a trip to my retreat center, which, of course, when the pandemic's over. But you spend an immersion weekend where you actually live in this estate, a home of mine with me to to work on the Internet with a very small group. And then we you have access to our TV studio. And so we shoot you with our high definition studio. And I actually saw just one of these videos that we produced selling for seven hundred dollars as a discount price at an event. We had one of my students shot. Fifty three of them, another one shot forty seven of them. And we edited them all put graphics on for and gave them to you to use for your marketing and everything else. So it's just loads and loads of unique things in my programs. And also if you're in the mentor program, you get a scholarship to my school, which you can give to you to a loved one. And we had one guy spend eighty thousand dollars on his daughter's education and she's in some crappy job and now she's making six thousand dollars a month as a side hustle, you know, because she's been he gave the scholarship to her and after four months, she hasn't even graduated yet. She's making money. So those very powerful tools that everybody on Earth needs, every business on Earth needs.

[00:18:56] Isn't that right, Kathy? We're talking about her, her website and everything here in a minute.

[00:19:03] But it's hard core skills.

[00:19:06] I'm getting sick of this running up big debt on kids and they're getting and they're learning how to protest and then they get out with no skills and they're competing for jobs at Starbucks. So that ends when you're in my school. So anyway, check out the mentor program at greatInternetmarketingtraining.com. Give me a call. No high pressure sales around here. If you don't see the value of what I'm providing, that's OK with me. So I was not going to change my lifestyle a bit. Might change yours, but not mine. So check it out. GreatInternetmarketingtraining.com.

[00:19:45] All right. Let's get back to the main event. Kathy Carter's here. She's an 18 year Air Force veteran. Just found out she had a brain tumor and affected her eyesight, but it did not stop her. And that's probably part of her inspirational speaking. It did not stop her from helping tons of people and tons of children. So, Kathy, what's a typical day look like for you now?

[00:20:11] My day is. I, I work three days a week, I do for clients a day at a spa and I absolutely love it and I just want the word out of my apartment.

[00:20:28] Oh, you just walk. That's good.

[00:20:30] Yeah. Right now down like, OK. Sometimes I go in and they call me Sunshine. I work. It's like sunshine.

[00:20:38] So-and-so wants to come in and get an appointment. There was wondering Yes. Outcome. Would they do any work. OK, I'm available. No I'm not available.

[00:20:47] And and also I do some coaching. I grew up coaching clients per week.

[00:20:55] Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I got to say something here. Yeah, well, we were emailing back and forth to get this thing set up, right. And so one of the things was there was the word sunshine at the end of your email.

[00:21:11] And I thought you were calling me Sunshine. Got me sunshine. Nobody's ever called me that.

[00:21:21] Okay, now I understand you're sunshine. All right. Okay, so anyway, you're you're still you're handling clients and so what else?

[00:21:33] And then I go to school, I substitute one to three days a week because you like to be with kids.

[00:21:41] Oh, my God. I get my feel what you wear me.

[00:21:45] I have to come home and take a shower and just sit. I'm like, wow, what a day.

[00:21:53] Yes. Yeah. And so and then I do a lot of walking. I love to walk sometime. I walk in the middle of the day, I walk about a half hour or so.

[00:22:02] And so are you coaching when you coach people, is it all distance coaching or is it some local coaches over the phone actually phone.

[00:22:11] Ok, yes.

[00:22:13] And I understand you are.

[00:22:15] This is all been word of mouth, I guess, because the massage clients turned into regular clients and now. So you never bothered to get a website.

[00:22:25] Just cracks me up. Everybody, listen.

[00:22:28] Is those that that's just beyond my comprehension, you know, Tom I you know, I never want to put myself out there.

[00:22:36] I'm like, I don't want to be on the Internet and I don't want people to really know, you know, I'm like I'm a private person.

[00:22:43] I just want to be, like, incognito coach. That's changed.

[00:22:47] Well, that that ends today, by the way. And plus, you've read the book and everything and you're speakers speaker. So so I think you've got to give up on that idea.

[00:22:59] Yeah, I think there is no way I got to think about a light behind a bushel like light back their cover by their lady.

[00:23:09] Well, that's the thing. I mean, you know, if I was your coach, I would be saying, man, you're being kind of selfish here. All these people you could help, all these children you say you love that need you need your expertise for their parents, you know, so you got to step it up.

[00:23:24] That's true. Yeah, right. Tom. And so I'm willing and that's why I'm here.

[00:23:29] So you'll do that in days or evenings or anything?

[00:23:34] Yeah, actually what I'll do is I'll only like one day a week doing massage. What we doing substitute because I love the writing and have the children and to really help people with massage, something I love. But our coaching is going to be my primary. That's my primary.

[00:23:55] Right. Of course. And in the budget you've created what they call a lifestyle business, which is what we're all about.

[00:24:02] You want to you want to be with the kids. So you go and substitute teach, get paid for it. You like the massage and you're good at it and it's fulfilling and makes people feel better. So you take some of that work, you coach people, you take some of that work. So you're really doing a lifestyle business.

[00:24:19] You do what you want to do. Absolutely. What was the name of the book again?

[00:24:23] Camouflaged Sisters. That's available on Amazon.

[00:24:30] Ok, Camouflaged Sisters, that's a great thing.

[00:24:33] Also, if they were like a signed copy from me and then their information and everything.

[00:24:43] Ok, so we've got your email address. KathyCMarie13@Gmail.com and that'll be in the show notes and. Well boy that's I got some good laughs here. It's been so much fun talking to you and hearing your story. And it's, it is an inspirational story. I mean, having a brain tumor, you know, standing up against the medical establishment that just wanted to buy a new Mercedes for cutting your head open. And it paid a little bit of consequence for it. But you you're your own woman and helped a lot of people. So thanks. Thanks so much for your service then and your service now.

[00:25:34] Thank you.

[00:25:36] All right, everybody, check out the show notes so you can catch all Kathy stuff. So that's one of the coolest name for the book I've heard for a while. Camouflaged Sisters. And what was that nickname again? The Texas Chainsaw. What?

[00:25:50] Texas Chainsaw Massagicator.

[00:25:55] I love it. All right, well, thanks so much and I appreciate you coming on.

[00:26:02] All right. Everybody will catch on the next episode. See ya later.
