Episode 901 – How To Lose A Debate
[00:00:08] Welcome to Screw the Commute. The entrepreneurial podcast dedicated to getting you out of the car and into the money, with your host, lifelong entrepreneur and multimillionaire, Tom Antion.

[00:00:24] Hey everybody! It's Tom here with episode 901 of Screw the Commute podcast. Today is how to lose a debate. Now, this is not political. Don't tune out because you love one guy or the other. We're talking about the presidential debate, but there's a lesson to be learned here. So this is definitely not political. All right. I hope you didn't miss episode 900. That was how to create and distribute 900 podcasts and all the details of doing that. I hope you didn't miss grabbing a copy of Automate Free. This is an automation book I have that tells you how I can handle 100 and, uh, I don't know, 100,000 plus subscribers, or we've had 150,000, actually, and 65,000 customers without pulling my hair out and with a small crew. So grab that at screwthecommute.com/automatefree and check out my mentor program at GreatInternetMarketingTraining.com.

[00:01:29] All right, so this episode, how to lose a debate, not political, of course. I'm referring to the presidential debate that just happened. And Joe Biden himself and this is a, quote, admits, I don't debate as well as I used to. All right. So this is not me saying it. That's what he he said himself. Of course, his people are spinning it even to say he won, even though CNN, who loves him, did a poll and he lost 67 to 33.

[00:02:03] All right, 33 to 67. But see, I don't care anything about that. I care about you. And what I want to talk about is the lead up. See, it was well known and well publicized that Joe Biden had 16 advisers and took a week off to prepare for this debate. Well, I got to tell you, I mean, think about this in especially in power hungry DC Now you take 16 different political operatives, all trying to curry favor and stay in a high power position and get paid a lot of money and have be well respected. Do you think they all got together and decided in lock step how they were going to present a unified front to the president? Uh, on what to do during the debate. That is just I mean, I have no insider knowledge. I hate politics, in fact. But the thing is, is I got common sense, and I know that these people are all power hungry. So do you. You know, like I said, do you think they all got together and created a unified front? No, they probably tried to get private time and give their idea of what to do and. And can you imagine if that happened to you? You're getting ready for a big event or a speech or something or a debate. And 16 different people are giving you their opinion, and probably all of them have a good idea.

[00:03:45] I mean, pretty good ideas, but your mind is getting just plastered full of of different ideas and wondering which one's best, which isn't. And and you're going to be on the spot and, and and I mean, anybody would get totally confused with that kind of, uh, of pressure on them. So how does this apply to you? Well, when you have a business idea, if you, you know, just ask your friends and ask around and ask your employees and maybe you should do that. But the thing is, is it's all going to be biased opinions with people that either love you and don't want to hurt your feelings, or they hate you and want to give you bad advice because you're the maybe you're the boss that's unliked. And so they want to sabotage you. It's just too many inputs directly to you now. So what do you do about it? I mean, I'm not trying to say just make wild decisions and go and see what happens, all right? No, I'm not saying that. Although online, you can do that relatively inexpensively and maybe not suffer too many consequences from it, but there's a better way. So what I'm suggesting is for you to get your ideas together, research the best you can online. You can ask for opinions, like I said, from people close to you, but you've got to understand they're not going to be unbiased.

[00:05:25] It's virtually impossible for them not to be biased. So what do you do? You do what we call focus groups. Now I'm going to do the next episode, 902 on focus groups. But I just want to mention the idea here and say, this is kind of how you lose a debate or this is how you lose a product launch or a product development. Um, too bad the Coca-Cola people didn't do this when they launched that new coat that bombed crazily. Too bad that Budweiser didn't do it when they, uh, had that, uh, Bud Light with Dylan Muckle Muckleberry or whatever his name is. Then in other words, they got a bunch of biased opinions that they thought made themselves look good, and then it backfired. All right. So so what you want to do is do a focus group and pay people if you have to, but it's better if they do not know you. I'll just give you two things now. It's better if they do not know you and that someone else leads the focus group. You know you have to not be involved because even if they're paid and they're in front of you and they know you're the one that's, you know, doing this whole thing, people are just I mean, a lot of people are just nice and they don't want to hurt your feelings.

[00:06:52] So if you're, uh, even if it's not an individual like you, you make the focus group leader, uh, act like it's some big company so that people don't mind ragging on big companies and giving their real opinions. Say, but if if you're standing there in front of them, they're going to be a lot of people or, I mean, even if I'm incorrect, you're going to kind of feel like they weren't telling you the real truth, or they were just telling you what you knew. They knew you wanted to hear. All right, well, that's not going to help you when your product or service or whatever your agenda is. Bombs. All right. So you want to get people that aren't worried about hurting your feelings and do a focus group. And like I said, episode 902, we'll talk about running focus groups and how that works. And anyway, that's how to lose a debate. Get just too many people too long trying to hammer you so that when you are on the heavy, heavy, heavy pressure, your mind is going all over the place because which why was better, you know? So you really need to have that all figured out before you move forward with your idea or your debate or I mean, you know, how many of us do debates? Not many, but we product, we launch products, and we want to make sure that that somebody actually wants them.

[00:08:15] And we want to get a good ideas to make the product better before we launch it. That's a good one of the reasons you do focus groups. So anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Like I said, I hate politics, but uh, too many uh, um, people advising you that know you and have a bias is probably going to hurt you. All right. When you think, oh, they're they're trying to help me. Uh, they're a lot of them are trying to help themselves. All right. So so just be careful about too many, uh, too much advice from people that know you and learn to do focus groups and make sure you catch the next episode. 902 all right. Check out my mentor program, greatInternetMarketingTraining.com, where you'll have me and a couple of my highly trained people telling you what to do. All right, Not 16 or 20 or 30 or or people. Um, you know that they hired yesterday teaching you their method. All right. That's not the way it works around here. So check out greatinternetmarketingTraining.com, and I will catch you on the next episode. See you later.
