[00:00:24] Hey everybody! It's Tom here with episode 827 of Screw the Commute podcast. Today, we're going to talk about personal bandwidth. In other words, how many projects can you comfortably handle at once? We'll check it out. All right. Hope you didn't miss episode 826. That was a bunch of side hustles that if you combine them, I'm almost certain you could get rid of the dreaded job and replace your income. And keep in mind, you don't have to replace all of your income when you're in business because you get a lot of tax deductions. So that was episode 826. Any time you want to get to a back episode, you go to screwthecommute.com, slash, then the episode number. Side hustles was 826. Today is 827. [00:01:17] All right, let's talk about bandwidth now. See bandwidth. The definition and the reason I got thinking about this, because I'm doing a lot of kind of electronic work with this with ham radio. And I got to thinking about bandwidths. And so the definition in electronics is a range of frequencies within a given band in particular that used for transmitting a signal. Okay. That's electronics. Who cares. Right. But there's a second definition in the dictionary. It says the energy or mental capacity required to deal with a situation.
[00:01:51] And they gave an example. He lives alone and says he doesn't have the bandwidth to handle a steady relationship. So those are right from the dictionary. I got so many projects going on. I've been a continuous learner my entire life, but all of them aren't high priority. They just keep moving along because of the way I kind of run my life. So I'm just going to run through a list of things, and I'm sure I haven't covered all of them because there's just so darn many of them. While I'm standing here recording, I'll never think of all of them, but I got ham radio and there's a million things to that with antennas and frequencies and radios and all the lingo and all that stuff. And I took a trauma first aid course. I paid a guy that's a pressure washing expert and to teach me how to do professional pressure washing, which saves me a fortune on this big estate. I'm learning welding. I got my commercial drone license. I'm running the business. Of course. I'm renovating the retreat center. I'm renovating my family home. I'm learning about easements and dealing with power companies, and I'm sourcing deer meat. All right, think about that one. I'm learning about lower back health because of my recent trouble with my back, and I'm paying attention to eating better and knocking off some pounds.
[00:03:15] And like I said, there's loads of other things that I do that I can't even remember as I'm jamming out this podcast. But I think you would say from hearing that list that I have quite a bit of personal bandwidth, and I do. But here's the thing I don't concentrate on all of those things at once, and many get more attention than others. For instance, running my business and taking care of my students gets super high priority. Learning to weld has been a low priority long term endeavor. Mean I bought my first welder several years ago and and yes, I've welded a couple of things, but you you should not depend on me to make a great weld that your life depends on. Let me put it that way. See, for that project, I'm just learning a little bit at a time, and I'm watching Facebook Marketplace for used welding equipment to set up a welding station in my garage. Again, low priority going on for years. And now another thing I got my commercial drone license. And some of you know, I'm a commercial multi-engine and instrument rated airplane pilot, but I concentrated heavily on that drone license when I got it, and now it's somewhat back burner, but I've gained the skills I need to do aerial roof inspections for money and real estate sales videos. The point I'm trying to make is, is you have to determine what your priorities are and how much you can handle at one time.
[00:04:43] And I'm sure many of you have family responsibilities that take high priority. And I'm sure you struggle with taking care of those responsibilities and still advancing your business priorities. Now you really need to evaluate yourself to see which are the most important things that you need to spend your time on and which things that you want to do. But they can progress more slowly without being forgotten. I don't want you forgetting all your goals and dreams, and you also need to really take a hard look at how many of the items on your list you can reasonably handle at one time. Be honest with yourself. So I suggest you make a list of the things you want to accomplish and prioritize them. Of course, the high priority ones should dominate your time, but I want you to then make a reasonable list of the ones that you can make some progress on, let's say, in the next month that aren't as high priority, but definitely need attention and, you know, a lot a certain percentage of your time to them. And then make another list of things that are low priority. But you really want to do sometime and and maybe to satisfy yourself, you spend a small amount of time on those items every day or every week or every month.
[00:06:04] And for instance, that last one, welding, it's really low priority for me, but I keep my eyes open for scrap metals I can practice on, and collecting metal that I can actually build something with in the future. And this takes virtually no time and no money, but it keeps me moving forward a little bit on the welding front. Now, I'm telling you, if you make an honest evaluation of yourself on how many things you can handle at once and make an actual written list not in your mind. It must be written down of other things you want to pursue. You're definitely going to move forward faster towards your goals and have a much more fulfilling life doing it. So that's my little story on personal bandwidth, but it's a really important thing in your life. Even though I only took a few minutes on it, I'm hoping I get get it in your mind that you can really do way more things than you think you can if you write them down and a lot time to them. Prioritize them, and you'll see a lot more progress on everything that you that you need to do and you enjoy to do. All right. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. We got Thanksgiving coming up. So happy Thanksgiving. Catch you on the next episode.
