Today, we're going to talk about getting better known. One of my quotes is the only way to exceed the average fees in your industry is to become better known. That's a frequent comment I got over many years. People say, I Googled you and you show up everywhere. Well, and that's what people would say when I got hired to speak. So that's what this episode is about.

Episode 622 – Getting Better Known
[00:00:08] Welcome to Screw the Commute. The entrepreneurial podcast dedicated to getting you out of the car and into the money, with your host, lifelong entrepreneur and multimillionaire, Tom Antion.
[00:00:24] Hey everybody, it's Tom here with Episode 622 of Screw the Commute podcast? Today, we're going to talk about getting better known. One of my quotes is the only way to exceed the average fees in your industry is to become better known. That's a frequent comment I got over many years. People say, I Googled you and you show up everywhere. Well, and that's what people would say when I got hired to speak. So that's what this episode is about. Hope you didn't miss episode 621. That was scare tactics. Now, this is a copywriting technique that sounds really mean and scummy. All right? But I assure you, the way I use it and the way I suggest suggested on that episode that you use it is not scummy or mean at all. And I also throw in some phrases you can use to help you employ scare tactics in your sales process. All right, pick up a copy of our automation e-book at screwthecommute.com/automatefree. This book saved me. Just one of the tips we actually estimated saved me. Seven and one half million keystrokes. All right. It allows me more time to spend with customers prospects and developing products and services. So it'll save you tons of stuff and make you a lot of money. So pick your copy up today. And hey, while you're at it, pick up a copy of our podcast app at screwthecommute.com/app and put us on your cell phone and tablet and take us with you on the road. All right. Let's talk about getting better known and why it can be so important to you. What I'm talking about here is you developing a celebrity status, and I'm not talking about making you into a household name. I mean, that's not necessary or even feasible for most people and certainly not necessary for you to make a fortune by becoming a celebrity in your industry. Now, the idea is to flood the zone, so to speak, with your name in a legitimate and positive fashion. We also cross over into reputation management, although that's not what we're really talking about today. But it certainly helps bury any negative things about you that may or may not be accurate. Now. Just now I said the word legitimate flooding the zone with your name. Well, let me give you some examples of things that aren't legitimate. See these as seen on TV logos that people put on their websites. Well, some are legit and some are fraudulent. See, you are misleading the public by making it appear like you were featured on those shows or magazines when the trick is you only advertised on them. This is misleading and fraudulent, and if any A-hole suggest you do this, report them to the Federal Trade Commission.
[00:03:23] Another fraudulent thing invited to speak at Harvard is fraudulent. Another guy I know is renting rooms near highly recognized institutions, and he's having you pay to be, quote, invited to speak. I'm sorry. I'm a little bit hoarse today, so I'll be stopping in my throat a little bit. So anyway, you pay to, quote, be invited to speak, implying that Harvard or some other institution is featuring you. Now, in my not so humble opinion, this is straight up fraud. And when you get caught going along with it, you're complicit in the fraud and your credibility is shot. Another one. Fake awards are not the way to go. I know one guy who had his neighbor make up a fake award. And he awarded it to himself, the fraudster, along with awarding it to a bunch of big name people who had nothing to do with the award. They did not accept it and they didn't even know about it. Just big names. And he was using their names to try to piggyback off of and pretty much steal their credibility. And once he put all this together and got his award, he shut it all down. So now he could brag that he got this award. Right. And then all these other big name people got the award again, in my not so humble opinion, total fraud.
[00:04:50] I would even call it criminal fraud. And I can't wait to go after this guy in my scam brigade TV show. Anyway. That's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about your name showing up in a positive light in a in legitimate places. So when people check you out, they see you are very substantial and worth more than the average person gets in your industry. So let's start with some infrastructure. I want you to put a press room on your website, not a media room. Don't call it a media room because that term gets confused with home theaters. Make it a press room. And I want you to start collecting media appearances on that page. I actually have separate ones for different things. For instance, for most of my main expertise, I have screwthecommute.com/recentappearances. For my anti scam work. I have scambrigade.com/pressroom and so forth. Now, if you don't have anything to put on these pages yet, don't worry. Just keep it hidden with no navigation to it until you land a few interviews. Now these interviews and mentions could be written audio like radio or podcasts or video as in TV or video podcast. Now, next thing you should create is a suggested topic page and follow that a suggested question document for each topic you can discuss.
[00:06:21] And if you really want to look like a pro, you know this is a great tip on actual radio interviews. Give them questions and how long it takes to answer each one. That way the host can let's say they see they have 60 seconds to go before a commercial break. They can pick a question that takes 45 seconds to answer and hit their commercial right on the dot. They'll think you're a massive pro. Now my latest topic page is screwthecommute.com/podcasthosts because I'm concentrating on podcasts more than radio and you can make a page with a more generic name like interview topics and interview questions if you want. All right. Now that you have your infrastructure built, you're ready to pitch. Now I've been doing what is called newsjacking for years. Newsjacking was a was coined this term by a guy named David Meerman Scott, who I interviewed on here on Episode 402. So that screwed the commuter commute for two. And this is the concept of seeing something that is already in the news and contacting media sources and offering yourself as an expert or commentator on that topic that's already in the news. It's infinitely easier to get interviews when the news media is already talking about the topic. The same concept applies to blogs and websites in your industry.
[00:07:53] I mean, you don't have to be all over the major media to make a fortune with this concept of news, Jack. All right, so how can you make this easy on yourself? So in steps Google alerts. It's a. Service Google gives you to tell you what's in the news. Now, it's funny because I've been doing this so long. There was a service called CompuServe many years ago in the beginning of the Internet, and they had a paid function to search the news and report any news about your topic to you. Now, with Google Alerts, it's free to do this. And so let me tell you how I taught a friend of mine to do this. And unfortunately, it's sad that he has to do this. But my friend Alan Barris is a active shooter expert. So I told him, put all the terms that have to do with active shooters in Google Alerts, and then you'll get an immediate notification when some active shooter event happens around the world or in the country. And then you go on Google and and search out all the radio and TV stations in that area and contact them to be an expert commentator on the topic. So he's got I don't know how many interviews he got because of this. All right. So so that's Google Alerts. Again, I want to remind you of the value of doing these things.
[00:09:22] People fly in from all over the world. Do you remember when the I don't know if you ever watched them or whatever, but the reality shows, they had cosmetic surgery shows on. Well, people were flying in from all over the world to have their cosmetic surgery done by the doctors they saw on TV. And and those doctors weren't any better or any worse. And they might be worse. Who knows of of other ones all over Los Angeles, you know, so. So this can really, really up your game by being better known. All right. So other ways to get known. Well, podcast interviews are great. And the reason I really, you know, I pooh poohed them for years, but now. I don't know. Four or five years ago when New Cars Can Play podcast from the dashboard and in-home devices like Google Assistant and Amazon's Echo Device. You know, there's hundreds of millions or billions more people can listen. So that's when I really got into it. So podcast interviews are a great way to promote yourself. Tv interviews. Now they're a much bigger hassle, but you get massive bragging rights out of it. You may not get much immediately from the interview, but capture it and brag about it forever. I'm still bragging about how I was asked to critique the president's speech to Congress.
[00:10:47] Well, guess what? No one ever asked which president. Nobody cares that it was George. Not Bush, George Washington. It doesn't make any difference. You can do live events on Facebook and YouTube. Live events in person speaking can really skyrocket your career. And I've trained more pro speakers than anybody living, so if you want info on pro speaking, get in touch with me. Being on panels is normally much easier preparation wise and still get your name out there and it sets you apart from the crowd. I mean, frequently others are on the panel who are much better known than you are, and you get to piggyback by association off their credibility. Now guest blogging. Now, it's not as popular as it once was, but it's just another way for you to flood the zone with your name. Another thing is being on virtual summits that can put your name in front of literally tens of thousands of people. And of course, your social media needs attention. And I did a recent episode on that called Back Off Social Media. That was episode 613. So it's through the sitcom Slash 613. This episode will save you tons of time handling social media and get you way bigger results. How about that? Now, I don't look that great on social media because for many years I've concentrated on my email list.
[00:12:19] That's made me millions of dollars. I can tell you, though, if I was just starting out, yes, I would pay tons of attention to social media, but still I would have the emphasis on getting them off of the social media onto my email list that I control. So make sure you listen in Episode 613. All about that. Now, starting a serious program to regularly do the things in this episode will absolutely make you better known. It'll let you raise your fees and your industry. It gives you the greatest chance to not only beat your competitors for work, but to get that work with a higher fee and less or no haggling. So here's what I like to hear when someone calls, are you available and can we afford you? That's what I want for you by getting better known. All right.
